Since the text field is kind of small, I use Notepad as a staging area to prepare the launch options string, and copy and paste it in. My current launch options are as follows:

-novid -noforcemspd -noforcemaccel -noforceparms -width 1024 -height 768

Before I explain any of the parameters, I want to note that there is a significant one that is not present: -dxlevel 81. This forces the game to use Direct-X 8.1, and results in a non-trivial frame rate boost at the cost of shiny surfaces and lighting that you probably don’t need in a match. The thing is, you only need to set this argument once, and the game remembers it so you can take out.

Forcing a Direct-X level (-dxlevel 90, 95, etc) will reset your graphics quality settings. This isn’t a big deal though, if you have an autoexec.cfg.

The first parameter, -novid skips the Valve starting sequence. Makes the start-up time marginally shorter, plus you don’t have to see a guy’s head with a valve stuck in his eye. Always a bonus whenever you can avoid something like that.

The next three, -noforcemspd -noforcemaccel -noforceparms disable mouse acceleration. This in theory makes your mouse movement linear with the cursor. This is player preference. With acceleration, a sharp flick will cover a lot more screen distance than a slow slide to the same point. Great if you have to get there in a hurry, but it’s not predictable, so to speak.

The last two just set your screen resolution. Self-explanatory.
